Macon County Sheriff’s Office K9 Chase has received body armor

Macon County Sheriff’s Office K9 Chase has received a bullet and stab protective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. K9 Chase’s vest was sponsored by Franklin Veterinary Hospital, PA of Franklin, NC and embroidered with the sentiment “Bono Malum Superate”.

Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, MA whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The non-profit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their four-legged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 2,800 protective vests, in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 2.4 million dollars.

The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate.

The donation to provide one protective vest for a law enforcement K9 is $950.00. Each vest has a value between $1,795 – $2,234 and a five-year warranty, and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. There is an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, please call 508-824-6978. With all the political turmoil and issues currently being discussed at all media levels, the term Midterm election is a key part. In 2018, seats on local, state and national levels will be up for election.


The Primary is set May 8, with absentee voting (by mail) beginning March 19 and ending May 1. One stop (early) voting will begin April 19 and end May 5, at the Macon County Board of Elections in the Macon County Courthouse and at the Highlands Civic Center. Franklin hours will be 8am – 5 pm Mon-Fri and Saturday 9am – 1 pm. Highlands hours are 9-4 Mon-Fri and 9-1 Saturday. (No voting at the BOE office in the courthouse this year)

US House of Representatives District 11: Two-year term, currently held by Mark Meadows, re-elected in 2016.
District Attorney District 30: Four-year term, held by Ashley Welch, elected in 2014.
NC Senator District 50: Two-year term, held by Jim Davis, re-elected in 2016.
NC House of Representatives District 120: Two-year term, held by Kevin Corbin, elected in 2016.
Macon County Commissioner District 1: Four-year term, currently held by Jim Tate, elected in 2014.
Two seats for Macon County Commissioner District 2: These are four-year terms. One seat is currently held by Ronnie Beale, re-elected in 2014, and the other seat is held by Gary Shields, elected in 2014.
Sheriff: Four-year term, currently held by Robbie Holland, re-elected in 2014.
Register of Deeds: Four-year term held by Todd Raby, re-elected in 2014.
Clerk of Superior Court: Four-year term, held by Vic Perry, re-elected in 2014.
Macon County Board of Education District 2: Four-year term held by Tommy Cabe, re-elected in 2014.
Macon County Board of Education District 4: Four-year term held by Fred Goldsmith, elected in 2014.
Two seats for Soil & Water Conservation District Supervisor begins Monday, June 11, at noon and runs through Friday, July 6, at noon. These are four-year terms, one of which is currently held by Pamela Bell, elected in 2014. The seat left vacant by James Roper is also up for election.
